E50: On Music Teaching [Music Nerd Edition]

In our latest Music Nerd Edition, fellow musicians Oliver and Lanzo join forces once again to talk music. They are not only musicians, also both teach music so this time they delve into the subject of music education and share their individual styles and philosophies of teaching. They also discuss the valuable role of parents in the success of children learning music, and take a slight detour to talk about “the unsung heroes of the music world,” accompanists. Whether or not you’re an educator, there are some nuggets of wisdom throughout you can certainly apply elsewhere.

E49: James Tsakalos, Redux: Going Unscripted with Empty-Handed NLP

Whether or not you’ve had the opportunity to listen to our first conversation with NLP trainer and innovator James Tsakalos (Episode #29. Link below), we truly believe our second conversation with him has an abundance of incredibly powerful insights that can help lead toward a deeper understanding of yourself and others. He and Carlos talk about the mind-body connection, the collaborative dance between our inner and outer experience of the world, and a candid discussion about some of the well-earned criticisms of NLP.

James is as real as it gets which is why we could not pass up the opportunity to have him back on the show to talk more about his extraordinary Spiral Somatics training, and explore his ideas and perspective on using NLP scripts which led him to creating his Empty-Handed NLP workshop. A course specially designed for those who have completed a standard practitioner level NLP training and are wanting a deeper dive into the principles and patterns that allow the techniques to work. James is passionate about equipping NLP practitioners with the skills that can lead to not only true mastery, but true artistry.

Episode #39: The Stream of Time [Music Nerd Edition]

Listen in as our resident musicians, Oliver and Lanzo once again discuss all things music in the harmonious way only these music nerds can do. They get into some really good stuff in this one, including rhythm and its vital importance to music, rhythm in different types of music, “stretching” rhythm (rubato) and “breaking the rules.” Lanzo shares his Stream of Time idea and the difference between piano and harpsichord, and the pair discuss Bach (of course) and debate who is the father of western music (which will likely surprise you).

Episode #38: John Kim Used to Be a Miserable F*ck

In the aftermath of heartbreak and divorce, John Kim discovered a passion to help others and went from an aspiring screenwriter to pursuing a career as a licensed therapist. To process his feelings and frustrations during that time, he began documenting his hero’s journey in a blog he titled The Angry Therapist.

“Why am I angry? Because the system is broken”

While working with troubled youth to collect his required hours for certification, he began to notice a painfully common theme among them: the physically and/or emotionally absent father. Because this rang true for him as well, his passions focused toward studying men’s issues, masculinity, and what it really means to “be a man.”

In this episode he shares about his own upbringing and experiences that have led him toward cultivating his own definition of “being a man. He believes every man must craft this definition for himself. He ultimately wrote a (soon to be released) book about it, titled: I Used to Be a Miserable F*ck: An Everyman’s Guide to a Meaningful Life.

The discussion also turns to the challenges of dating in the present social climate, the importance of “tribe” while on a path of self-betterment, why it’s ok to feel anger, and why dogs are the best therapists.

“I love the word Tribe because I think the greatest misconception about self-help is the word self. We actually are not meant to do life alone.”

Whether you’re a man, a woman, or neither, this episode definitely has something for you. We really love this one and are so curious to know your thoughts and feelings about it, too. We can see some great discussion coming from this one, please come back and share after you have a listen.

Episode #37: Who is Satch Purcell?

His birth was fortold. He was inspired by a monkey to crawl. Who on earth is Satch Purcell?!

In the early days of the show, our co-hosts interviewed one another and those recordings have only been available for listening on the homepage of our website with their bios… until now! You now get to listen in as we release Satch’s full interview as an episode for the first time, which includes the story of how the Authenticity Show was born.

Learn how his unique and challenging early life led to an amazing story of overcoming as Satch shares some significant stories from his life that have contributed to the inspiring human he has come to be. In these stories you get to discover how his early experiences paved the way to a path of mastery, and how they equipped him for becoming the incredibly compassionate and dedicated primary caregiver to the love of his life, Taniya, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis early into their relationship.

. . .
“Somehow my parents did this amazing job being a guru to me as I grew up. They couldn’t do it for themselves or with each other but somehow they gave me that gift.”
. . .
“My upbringing, and I think my training as an Acupuncturist and my training as an Occupational Therapist gave me the skills that I needed to be able to handle the situation. It has not been easy, but I feel very fortunate that my particular training has given me skills that I can use to give Taniya a better life.”
. . .
“I like to use perspective.” … “Compassion fatigue is something that caregivers have to deal with. All I have to do is flip the script and say, what if I was the one? She’d do so much better than me. Or, what if I wasn’t here? What if she had to face this problem by herself?”
. . .
“Our church is the night sky. The congregation is the plants, and the crickets, and the frogs, and the coyotes, and the skunks.” … “The running that we do feels like a sacred experience and when we’re sharing it we go into a sacred space because of all the trust and authenticity that we share. This show was born while we were running.”

Episode #33: Struggling Gracefully w/Petalyn Albert
